Historic Santa Clara County club to add competitive League Two team

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Today the USL announced that Almaden FC will begin play in USL League Two in 2024.

The club was founded in 1967 to provide soccer to the local community. In 2007 competitive level teams were established. Almaden FC continues to develop local talent from all over the Bay Area, creating opportunities and elite pathways to allow players to maximize their potential.

Many players started their journey in AFC and have gone on to lead professional careers, including recently retired defender Steven Beitashour, and current USL League One player, Andrew Paoli.

“Almaden FC remains dedicated to advancing the sport, providing avenues for talent development, showcasing players, and fostering a passion for soccer in our community,” Tom Brough, the club general manager, said. “USL League Two serves as a vital link, enabling AFC's youth and college players to realize their aspirations and serve as inspiration for future generations of players in the stands.”

“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Almaden FC to League Two,” Joel Nash, USL SVP of Youth and Pre-Professional Properties, said. “This is a club with the infrastructure, the know-how, and the ability to impact its community that will make them a fantastic addition to the league.”

Today, AFC is the biggest youth soccer club in Santa Clara County, with over 3500 players participating annually at all levels of the game. The club not only develops talent at the highest level but invests in their community to provide over 250 free hours of high-level coaching to underprivileged young players.
