Seattle, WA - A costly match in Seattle held a lot of weight as CFC Atletico and Ballard FC faced off for the first time in the 2022 season. The winner was set to take the top of the table, clinching the number one spot in the USL League Two Northwest Division.

The first 20’ of the match were controlled by Ballard as Atletico appeared out of rhythm. Settling more into their known style of play, Atletico’s midfield led by Sebastian Schacht, Jose Sosa, and Marios Andreou, connected to change the momentum of the game, pressing the ball back into the Ballard FC half.

Although creating chance after chance, Atletico was unable to convert in the box, leaving the frontline frustrated and eager to score a goal. Tensions rose as a 0-0 halftime sent both teams into the locker room to reconstruct their game plan.

A second half rally started for Atletico in the 70’ when a set piece off the foot of Sosa fell perfectly to Silva who headed the ball to Afonso for an easy tap-in. Although up 1-0, it was clear Atletico was not satisfied.

In the 76’, the squad found themselves celebrating again as Schacht connected with Afonso to give a 2-0 lead.

With less than 20’ left to play, an off the pitch shove by Ballard FC goalkeeper caused both teams' already existing tensions to rise. Both squads received multiple bookings as the referees tried to gain some sort of control and settle the chatter. As the final whistle blew, a typically rowdy Ballard FC crowd was stunned and silent as they watched CFC Atletico serve them their first loss of the inaugural 2022 season.

“It’s very rewarding…we’re really starting to peak at the right time,” said Head Coach, Matt Broadhead. “We put ourselves in a good spot. This was a massive win tonight on the road.”

Playoff details are TBA shortly as Atletico and Ballard stand firm in the number one and two spots with 20 points each.

Atletico is set to hit the road on Thursday, July 7 against Lane United FC then will be back at home July 10 in their final home match of the season. Get your tickets here.
