SALEM, Ore. – CFC Atletico collected their first loss of the season falling 1-0 to PDX in their home opener.

Over 300 fans gathered at John Chambers Field as CFC Atletico took the home pitch for the first time under the new name. A 70º evening filled with free t-shirts, the sound of drums, smell of tacos, and taste of beer left fans eager for an exciting season debut.

Holding possession most of the first part of the match, Atletico was able to create chances, but unable to work past PDX FC’s defense in the box. Corner after corner opportunity came for the squad, but no goals. A scoreless and rather uneventful first half left both teams to the drawing board.

At the half, CFC honored the 2021 USL League Two squad on their Western Conference Championship with a “victory lap” around the field. Led by 2021 standout, Marco Afonso, and countless youth players, Head Coach, Matt Broadhead, said a thank you to the fans and staff of the past season, crediting them to the teams overwhelming success.

CFC also honored theirs and United PDX’s USL Academy team who brought home the 2021 USL Academy U17 Select Cup in December.

The second half started out with an even playing field where both teams' defenses were tested. In the 71’ PDX FC was able to connect in the box and barely slide a ball off the hands of Quinn McCallion to take the 1-0 lead.

Second half chances continued to come for Atletico but nothing was able to connect. The match ended in a PDX FC 1-0 victory.

“Games like this happened,” stated Broadhead. “We’ll regroup and be ready to go on Friday.”

The squad hits the road this Friday, May 27 to face Lane United FC for the first time this season.
