ALBANY, Ore. -- The Timbers U23 squad remains #1 in the USL League Two Northwest Division with a tight 2-1 win over OVF Alliance on July 9th.

In the fourth and final match against OVF this season, it took two goals from forward Ivan Mykhailenko to get the win.

The team looked like it would be rolling after Ivan’s first goal of the night in the 27’ minute of the game, where Marco Afonso took advantage of a poor touch from one of OVF’s center backs to spring Mykhailenko through on a 1v1 where Ivan calmly finished his sixth goal of the season.

Not a dominant half by any means, but the team went into halftime holding onto the 1-0 lead.

The start of the second half saw plenty of back and forth action with neither team commanding the game. George Tasouris came up huge in goal with multiple saves tonight, but no save was as big as the one in the 53’ when he blocked a shot flying towards the top corner.

Unfortunately Tasouris wasn’t able to keep them all out, as an own goal in the 56’ broke the game wide open.

The team had multiple great chances to go ahead after OVF found the equalizer, but ultimately couldn’t put those chances away. In the 90’ minute it seemed as if both teams would walk away from the game with a point, until Timothy Bielic took on two OVF defenders, beat them, and crossed the ball to the back post where Ivan Mykhailenko slid to get the ball in the goal in the second minute of stoppage time for his seventh goal of the season.

The match ended moments after that, and resulted in a 2-1 Timbers U23 win, leading the team to an overall 8-1-1 record.

The team will be back home this Sunday, July 11 to take on PDX FC for the final time, in a game that will likely decide who wins the Northwest Division. Tickets for the match can be found here.
