GRESHAM, Ore. -- The Timbers U23 squad bounces back to defeat PDX FC 3-1 on Sunday, June 27.

After Friday nights own goal and missed PK, Head Coach Matt Broadhead and the team were eager to prove that that was “just a phantom match.” Broadhead made it clear in an interview that the team was to come out and play their game, putting Friday behind them. And they did just that.

Record heats hit Oregon this weekend which pushed a 2PM kickoff up to 10AM. This game made state history as the hottest match played with day temperatures reaching 111 degrees.

Within the first 10’ of the match, the Timbers had multiple runs, looking for an opportunity to score. In the 25’, Koa Santos at the 18’ placed a ball perfectly to Marco Afonso who headed it in to give the boys a 1-0 lead.

Right back into their typical scoring ways, within 3’ the squad secured another goal off the foot of Ivan Mykhailenko, recording his 4th goal of the season. The team went up 2-0 into half time.

The second half started off strong for the team, winning multiple corners as well as having shots that were saved or cleared by PDX FC. Temperatures continued to rise both in the air and on the field in the last 10’.

In the 82’, PDX FC made a run and were able to steal the clean sheet and change the score to 2-1. Late game substitutions brought on Cody Sunquist, Luke Bone, Tim Bielic, Jack Moothart, and Levonte Johnson. Momentum was shifting as the fresh legs on the pitched looked to add a third goal.

Come the 87’, JuCo All-American Levonte Johnson, called game with a banger of a goal into the back left of the net to go up 3-1. Assist was thanks to Jack Moothart - both players had been on the pitch for less than 10’ before recording a goal.

The squad finished out the match on top of the game and regaining a solo number one spot in the USL League Two Northwest Division standings. The team will enter their final third of the season, playing each team one more time with a 6-1-1 record.
