SEATTLE, Wash. -- The Timbers U23 recorded their first shutout of the season, holding off the Seattle Sounders FC U23 to a 0-0 tie.

From kickoff, the Timbers U23 were controlled, working together, moving the ball forward. In the 3rd minute, Rey Ortiz sent one into the box that was saved by the Sounders keeper. Timo Mehlich tried again in the 14th minute, but again the Sounders were able to make the stop.

Heading into halftime, the score remained 0-0 with both teams defenses working hard to keep it that way. The Sounders came out strong early in the second 45’ with two big opportunities to score, but were unable to capitalize.

The remainder of the game stayed an aggressive defensive match in which a total of seven yellow cards were handed out. Both teams held possession and were given equal chances to score, but the match remained at a 0-0 tie to all. The Timbers led the Sounders in shots on goal 6-4.

“Proud of the guys effort tonight,” stated head coach, Aaron Lewis. “I think we will take away a couple of the things we did with the ball to minimize the transitions coming back at us.”

The Timbers U23 remain on the road playing Sunday, June 15 in Victoria, B.C. against the Victoria Highlanders FC. Catch the squad back in Salem Sunday, June 23 at McCulloch Stadium.
